HANDS OFF VENEZUELA!
ILPS in Canada condemns with disgust, the US invasion of Venezuela, bombing of Caracas and abduction of democratically elected President Maduro and the 1st lady Cilia Flores. This is a gross violation of international law and a part of a global trend of escalating imperialist aggression against anti-imperialist nations and forces, as well as a race between imperialist blocs for influence and resources.
On January 2nd, at least 7 drone strikes were heard throughout Caracas hitting a port. Shortly after, the US military abducted President Maduro and the 1st lady from their homes and flew them out of Venezuela to the US where they will face bogus criminal charges of drug trafficking and “narco-terrorism”. The Trump administration has made lofty claims of “restoring democracy” to Venezuela, but has been more than clear about its true intentions – to take control of oil reserves and the rich natural resources in Venezuela and the labour power of the Venezuelan people. Canada has, along with G7 and NATO allies, supported imperialist intervention in Venezuela since the election of Maduro in 2013 and reelection in 2018, eagerly waiting to take advantage of Venezuelan resources .
This is an escalation from the systematic drone strikes and anti- Maduro propaganda operation by the US and its allies since October 2025. Over 80 Venezuelans have been killed by US drone strikes under the guise of “counter-narco terrorism” operations, without any evidence of the boats and their crews, or the Maduro administration being involved in drug trafficking operations.
This is a part of the escalation of US led war and aggression to secure spheres of influence and crush anti imperialist forces. The use of the monroe doctrine, an inherently violent, imperialist doctrine developed in 1823 that states that everything in the western hemisphere is for the use of the US, as a justification for these attacks is a disgraceful violation of the national sovereignty of Venezuela and all nations in the Caribbean and Latin America, and shows the urgent necessity of fundamental and revolutionary change to oust imperialist aggressors and put in place systems that put people over profit.
We call on all members, allies, anti-imperialists and peace loving people to stand in solidarity with the Venezuelan people in their resistance against imperialist aggression and strengthen the anti imperialist struggle in so called canada to develop a united and militant movement against imperialist war and aggression. The people of Venezuela are fighting for their land, livelihoods and sovereignty against imperialist military aggression, and we have the responsibility to stand alongside them in our shared struggle against imperialism.
