All Eyes on Wet’suwet’en!

ILPS stands in militant solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en in their struggle to assert their sovereignty and self-determination on their unceded territories.

The recent decision of the colonial courts to uphold the ‘right’ of the Coastal Gaslink to build their pipeline across Wet’suwet’en land and the response of the House Chiefs of the 5 Wet’suwet’en clans, evicting CGL from their territories, make this contradiction very clear. On the one hand is the law of the Canadian imperialist state, law that has developed over centuries to protect the interests of property owners and the capitalist class. On the other hand is Wet’suwet’en law, asserting the sovereignty and self-determination of the Indigenous people, and based on a millenia old relationship of protection of the land and responsibility to future generations. As working class and oppressed people this is very clear to us: we stand with Wet’suwet’en!

With the prospect of another violent attack on the Wet’suwet’en we must be vigilant and prepared to show our solidarity. The January 7, 2019 RCMP attack on the Gidimt’en checkpoint exposed the sham of Canadian state driven ‘reconciliation’. This is the same colonial state that hung Louis Riel, the same colonial state that deployed its military to attack the people at Kanehsatake, the same colonial state that fired 77,000 rounds of ammunition at Sun Dancers at Gustafsen Lake, the same colonial state that massively and disproportionately jails Indigenous people and that continues to kidnap Indigenous children through the colonial “child-welfare” system.

The recent revelation that the RCMP was prepared to use deadly force against land-defenders last January, and their recent establishment of a no fly zone should leave us with no doubt that the Canadian state is fully willing to use violence to protect the rights of corporations and the rich. To stop this we have to be prepared to mobilize in our thousands and to fight back by becoming a disruptive force that raises the cost of imperialist aggression. That’s certainly our responsibility when this violence is directed against Indigenous people. It’s also our responsibility when the violence is directed against oppressed people in Iran or Afghanistan or Haiti or anywhere else.

From Palestine to Wet’suwet’en; from Six Nation to Bolivia; from Elsipogtog to the Philippines and India; Indigenous, oppressed and colonized people have a right to exist and the right to resist the imperialist states and corporations that occupy their territories, plunder their lands, and rob them of their right to self-determination.
